If warming melts ice fields, could the shift in weight affect plate tectonics? (light land/heavy ocean plates)?
Antarctica with no ice weighs much less and oceanic plates covered by more water weigh much more. Might that upset the balance in plate tectonics and result in more volcanic activity and more earthquakes?
The effect is known as iso static rebound. As the weight is removed from the land surface the level of the land will rise as a response. This can cause minor localized earthquakes but will have little impact on valcanic activity. This effect has happened many times in the past. As little as 5000ya on the east coast of Australia during the last sealevel rise at the end of the last iceage. The sinario was a little different but the effects were the same.
